“We must change our basic concepts of value and life…” and you go on to say: “for the planet to survive.” But of course, the planet will survive—just not as a friendly and nurturing environment for humans. The unfortunate thing about inducing change in basic concepts is the magnitude of the shock required to realize substantive reevaluation of core beliefs. In a consumer-based capitalist society the core delusion is that constant growth to build utopia powered by energy obtained by burning fossil fuels is a basic human right. We have built a society that never wants less. We want more material goods, more freedom, more leisure time to vacation in far away places, more entertainment, plus more ease to be equal in our distribution of extravagances. The door is being slammed shut on that value system. But people will still be wedded to the old capitalist core beliefs until death do them part.
