The phenomenon of “stupid” that you petition against is widespread among humanity because of each individual’s need (on a spectrum of need) for a group identity. We fantasize and play into conventions that satiate a basic need to congregate and build connections supported by beliefs that promote the building of civilization, safety, comfort, sexual relationships, and family. Our last stupidity across all humanity (but most prominent in western society) is the wholehearted acceptance of capitalism’s fantasy of unrestrained growth within Earth’s finite systems while also using an energy source (fossil fuels) that build a hothouse Earth by way of unfettered CO2 emissions. We are now at the “Come to Jesus” moment of that fantasy. And it’s a self-delusion that has put us on an unstoppable path to climate apocalypse (that is already unfolding) and a terrible extinction for most of humanity and many other living organisms. It may be that the “lucky” human survivors who pass through the coming bottleneck of our culminating stupidity will form rational belief systems that will sustain them on a new journey in history that will unfold on a Earth that will be hostile and unforgiving toward fantasy.
