Recent evidence implies that ocean currents in the North Atlantic are slowing. There is concern that the currents may suddenly stop because of cold water from melting ice flowing into the Atlantic. The current has stopped before and the heat transfer the currents provide to Northern Europe and some of North America ended for a prolonged period of time. Once stopped the currents take centuries to restart. If the Atlantic current stops suddenly within the next decade it would be a mega-shock to society both psychologically and economically. Not to mention environmentally with deep cold returning like a mini ice age. It might be viewed as nature fighting back against global catastrophe to get some urgent attention from humankind. It is my conceit (hopeful) that Gaia has a consciousness and will fight back in her own way against human overreach. Maybe we will get a warning shot with the Atlantic current stoping as a way of telling us to change our economies and other ways of life if we want to survive as a species long term. Life will get difficult but we will have an opportunity to reboot into a wiser and better Uber-consciousness. Otherwise we risk turning everything over to the jellyfish for millennia. We live on a complex planet with interconnected weather systems and a planetary consciousness born from deep time. It seems prudent to consider that we will encounter surprises as the planet changes by our own pollution and our reckless disregard of earth’s complexity.
