People who are comfortable in the wealth of modern life made possible by burning fossil fuels will not allow themselves to be evangelized into giving up comfort for any reason, and certainly not for actions that might mitigate hostile “weather” that is projected to occur. The best that can be expected is that some people will cut back here and there and perhaps be mentally prepared to migrate—or dig in with changes in place. Unfortunately, the coming disasters will have to materialize in the present as a spur to reactive action. One reaction (to determine winners and losers as society is remade) will be violence across our various tribes as we fight each other (as we are fighting now) over dwindling resources and livable habitats. If nuclear war occurs, the restructuring of life will be radical and blindingly abrupt. But even if the worst of war is avoided the unraveling of the unknowable complexity that supports modern life will lead to an era of primitive survival as humanity muddles its way toward a redefined relationship with energy and nature.
