It’s all just a continuation of wanting “States Rights” to have supremacy over a restrained federal government. And the most conservative states want to decide individually how to apportion legal rights, run local government, and who deserves to vote. Not to mention that States Rights used to include the option to legalize the ownership of chattel slaves. Economic considerations will restrain any push for chattel slavery to make a comeback; but there are many pathways to maintaining an exploited workforce. And beyond that, it will be the desire of the most authoritarian states to have the right to legislatively appoint their federal representatives and Senators (no popular vote needed).
