I agree with you that extreme climate impacts have pushed to the front of what makes up the baseline for economic activity as global boiling proceeds. But I think there is more than just people having a sense of hardship that propels deconstruction of democracy. My feeling is that for many of our “legacy white” citizens it’s more a sense of losing control of the social narrative. In particular, Trump folks want control over the enforcement levers of government from the school board level all the way up to the United States Presidency and the Judicial system. Because to this wing of the populace, laws and punishments should apply only to “degenerates” and the subjugated of society and not to the special class of elites who rule the oligarchy of consumer capitalism—as long as the elites promote a social narrative that honors the norms and fantasies of right-wing “Christian” fascism. At some point, climate reality will even wipe away the infrastructure and ideals of Christian fascism; but in the meantime the allure of fanaticism will ramp up to a boiling hysteria.
