Entrenched & unbalanced systems (capitalist production, consumerism, hyper-individualism, using technology primarily for the pursuit of happiness, et. al.) inevitably must collapse before different values and systems arise as the directing systems of human affairs. We will continue on the path we have hewn over the last 200 years until our adopted ways of living become unsustainable. If we can avoid collapse because we are lucky, clever, and/or minor gods who figure out unlimited energy, then we will continue on with our trajectory of continuing expansion. If we are simply opportunistic and delusional over-users of nature, then we will encounter mass death as our systems of living adjust to reality.
