Another insightful essay from you Mike. I don’t really see a safe landing for any society that must transition from an economic system built on assumptions of continuous growth to a sustainable economy and social norms that get beyond growth.
Humans hate limits. And we are suspicious of elites who want to impose limits on others but not themselves (SCOTUS anyone? Among others).
As you have said before, modern western society exists as a hyper-object. It’s impossible to trust limits when the fabric of the society we live within is opaque and works as a mask to chicanery.
We are left without enough focus of purpose and trust to get beyond our death spiral. Meanwhile nature is on an accelerated path to sorting us out with a reset of the entire planetary biosphere. Oops.
