All the projections about America losing democracy makes the assumption that Americans have experienced democracy or even know what democracy is. We do have freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom to practice religion, freedom to own a gun, and freedom to be stupid. But democracy as in freedom of every adult to vote with equal application and power has never existed. And I’m not sure Americans really want the hassle of needing to be informed and proactive in pursuing a right to vote. Most adults can be satisfied with the other freedoms. So until not having true democracy starts to impinge on the practical aspects of enjoying free speech, religion, freedom of movement, and guns then doing the hard work of participating in democracy will never be a selling point for voting.
