A very horrific and sad occurrence. I read an article that described how the area around the town is naturally dry. But the situation was made worse by development over many, many years that essentially cut of natural water flow of streams that could bring water down from the very wet areas of the island. Humans created the situation by disrupting the area’s natural defenses, and then the combined factors of fire and wind were able to race through the town to destroy so much history. It’s an analogy of what we humans are doing to the biosphere globally, having set ourselves up in a fragile dynamic that allows for disaster to overwhelm everything all at once.
